A friend’s Aunty would not buy free range chickens. You just don’t know where they’ve been!
Ha Ha. I hope this is a joke. It's a good one.
I think Inglewood are the only certified organic chicken producer at present. The difference is in the processing. Organic chicken processing is treated with the minimum required amount of chlorine and then air dried in cool rooms (taking 6 hours or so) vs. 3 minutes in a chlorinated ice-bath (up to 9% of the body weight can be water!) to allow portioning to occur immediately. Inglewood chook is worth the price as an occasional treat.
The 'orchard raised' chicken from the Adelaide Hills (available from Meat at the Market intermittently) is my best local chook here in SA. Nomad Farms (Adelaide Farmers Market) very occasionally have a heritage breed chook - but I've not managed to try it yet and assume it's processed in the standard way.
Thank you for this excellent information.
